What’s it all about?
The Songcraft Songwriting Circle is a small, casual circle for Singapore songwriting enthusiasts to come together to share their very own compositions with fellow songwriters, and basically meet like-minded friends and have fun.
The whole idea is to create a platform for interested songwriters to perform their works, receive helpful comments, share ideas, offer advice, exchange songwriting tips and techniques, and basically to socialise and network with fellow songwriting enthusiasts.
What are the meetings like?
The meetings are meant to be extremely cosy, fun, and informal.
The meeting place will typically be a cosy venue equipped with instruments like a keyboard and guitar (and maybe a piano even), where songwriters will take turns to share their works, and fellow members will sit round to hear them perform.
There will be no judging and no criticising. Just helpful comments and words of appreciation.
It’s all about celebrating the art of songwriting. ![]()
How often do you meet?
We aim to meet up once a month, usually on the last Friday of each month.
Do I need to have any songwriting experience or musical abilities?
Not at all. Beginner songwriters are most welcomed.
Can’t play any instrument? Fret not. You can just sing your song, and that would do just fine. Some helpful members might even offer to work out an instrumental accompaniment for you.
What kind of songs must I write?
Nothing in particular, really. Basically anything that comes from the heart. All genres are welcomed, including pop, Broadway, rock, classical, Christian, jazz, world, etc.
We want to celebrate freedom of musical expression.
What if I can only write music, or lyrics?
No worries. Just simply share your music or lyrics with us. Who knows, you might even get to know some composers/lyricists at the meetings and eventually team up to write full songs!
What if I have no songs, but still wish to look-see?
No worries. You are most welcomed to sit in and simply appreciate other songwriters’ works. All we are looking for are people passionate about the art of songwriting.
Must I pay to join?
Nope. It’s completely FREE.
But you need to register by emailing songcraftcircle@gmail.com as places for each session are limited.
This circle is meant to be a purely non-profit interest group, which also means that funds are limited (or non-existent, rather), and that everything is stripped to the bare essentials, which in a way allows us to focus on the art of songwriting itself.
How do I join?
Simply drop me an email at songcraftcircle@gmail.com for more details and updates on upcoming “open mic” sessions.
(NB: As we would like to keep meetings to a comfortably cosy size, we would probably limit the group size to around 25 persons max, for a start.)
Hey folks, thanks for adding to sgSocialMediaDir. Wow, didn’t know you existed! I bet your group and the library can do something together (e.g. Library@Esplanade). I’d be happy to hook your group up with the library folks. Since I’m commenting here, I’d like to be added to your mailing list if you don’t mind. Thanks!
Hi there Ivan, thanks for dropping by! The Library@Esplanade suggestion is a great one. Will definitely consider that option in the near future. Thanks very much for that. Sure, we’ll be happy to add you to the mailing list. Cheers!
I found your site about songwriting when I was searching for Open Mic sessions in Singapore. I salute you for your group’s love of music and have come to love the articles written here.
I want to join, together with some friends, maybe to start by just having a look-see. I’m just not sure if your group is open to other races… I’m a filipina, btw.
In any case, I just would like to say that I admire your circle’s efforts to celebrate music & songwriting, and hope one day I can also enjoy your music, if not in an open session, maybe on a public venue. Keep keepin’ on .. (^_^).
Hi there vinx, thanks for your kind words. You are definitely most welcomed to join the session this coming Friday! We are definitely open to everyone, regardless of race. (Just as long as you are in Singapore, cos otherwise it would be rather inconvenient, haha!)
Yep, our main aim is simply to celebrate and promote the art of music & songwriting, and we hope to bring together people who share the same interest and passion. It is going to be a casual affair where we simply appreciate each other’s music and get to know more friends.
Looking forward to seeing you and your friends at our first session!
A guitar and a song, life is good.
