The right words are so important, this is where the Vowel triangle comes in.

Certain words sound horrible in the top register
Patt Pattison of Berklee College has written a marvellous article under the heading Beauty and the Beast. Many non singing lyric writers , write songs that are terrible to sing, they look at a lyric as something to please the eye when it's to please the voice .

The best time for me to come up with great songs is first thing in the morning, the reason being that I wake up refreshed with nothing else to think about but the song, I have retired from the rat race. and my time is my own,

I am also into property renovation , but my time is my own, I can write while I am doing jobs around the Villa (I Live In The French Country side).

Whatever suits you as an individual, for me it's always the play back ,of an idea that decides
if I am to contiue or scrap the new song.
I am a pro singer and have a wide vocal range.

Often certain ideas that sound okay in my head sound wrong when I hear the play back, but this enables me to try another meter or another rhythm.

Good point about forming songs away from an instrument. I'm quite the opposite -I write with the guitar, so I often call myself a 'guitarist-songwriter'... I've found that when I've come up with a melody just vocally, then recorded it, it always seemed to sound bad when listening back... I guess everyone develops their own way of writing...

(I have written one song on keyboard, just using the black keys...)
